Gutters and guards sized for Greer lots full of pines

Gutters that are too small, clogged or sagging cause about half the rot we find in the Upstate. We size them to the roof and to the trees, run them seamless, and fit guards that needles really do slide off.

Micro-mesh gutter guards being installed on new dark bronze seamless gutters

Gutters around Greer work harder than they do in most places. Pines shed needles all year, and those needles mat down inside five-inch gutters and slip straight through cheap screens. A summer storm can dump two or three inches of rain in an hour. Behind an overflowing gutter, the fascia is usually pine or fiberboard, and it rots out within a few seasons. The answer is plain and dependable. Use six-inch seamless aluminum sized for the roof area, larger downspouts, hidden hangers every 24 inches, and micro-mesh guards wherever there are pines. Fix the fascia first, before the gutter goes up, not afterward.

Our seamless gutters are formed right at your house from 0.032 aluminum in the usual colors. The hidden hangers screw into the rafter tails, and each run is pitched to drain rather than hold standing water. For guards we use stainless micro-mesh on an aluminum frame, which sheds pine needles and shingle grit, instead of foam inserts or plastic screens that give out within a year. Downspouts empty into extensions or drain lines, so the water is carried away from the foundation. Water dumped at the foundation is the crawl-space problem that every home inspector in Greenville County flags.

The work, piece by piece

Seamless aluminum gutters

Five- and six-inch K-style formed on site from 0.032 gauge, hung on hidden hangers, in bronze, white, black and other colors.

Matched to the roof

On large roofs and steep pitches where five-inch gutters spill over, we use six-inch gutters with 3×4 downspouts.

Micro-mesh guards

Stainless mesh over an aluminum frame that sheds needles and grit, so you are not cleaning gutters twice a year.

Fascia work

Rotten fascia and soffit are replaced before the new gutter goes on, and can be wrapped in aluminum so they need no upkeep.

Getting water away

Extensions, splash blocks or buried drain lines that carry the water clear of the foundation.

Repairs and cleaning

Sagging runs fastened back up, corners and end caps resealed, and gutters cleaned before guards are installed.

Gutters: what people ask us

Do I need five-inch or six-inch gutters?

Six-inch for two-story houses, steep roofs and any run draining more than about 2,000 square feet of roof. They carry 40 percent more water and clog less often. Five-inch works fine on small ranch houses with no pines nearby.

Will gutter guards stop pine needles?

Micro-mesh will, and very little else does. Needles slide right off the stainless mesh, and the frame is stiff enough that it does not sag. Under pines, screens and foam inserts fill up within a single season.

Can new gutters go up the same week as my new roof?

Yes, normally the day after the roof is finished. That way the drip edge and gutter apron are handled together, and we can check the fascia while the eave is still open.

Why do only my front gutters overflow?

In most cases a valley is pouring into one spot, a downspout is clogged, or the gutter has lost its slope. Adding a downspout, putting a splash guard at the valley or re-hanging the run usually fixes it for less than new gutters would cost.

Can you fix my fascia?

Yes, and we do it before the gutter goes on. In the Upstate, painted fascia holds up for only a few years, while fascia wrapped in aluminum lasts for decades.

How long does a gutter install take?

A single day for most houses, and that includes taking down the old gutters and hauling them away.
